PCI2 service: potential volume, market and competitors

Sales team assessment, week 42

Market highlights

  • ChinaQingdao continues to be the preferred China port, attracting higher demand than Shanghai.
  • Japan outportsThe limited shipping line coverage to Japan outports creates an opportunity for us to gain a larger market share.
  • KoreaWood pellet commodities continue to dominate shipments to Korea, including Busan, Incheon, and Kwangyang. Recently, demand for shipments to Incheon has increased due to the limited services offered by other shipping lines
  • RussiaAt present, shipment demand to Vladivostok has slightly increased, primarily consisting of food commodities and wooden furniture
  • MexicoShipment demand to Manzanillo remains similar to previous periods—stable but slowly increased—with the main commodities being apparel and wooden equipments

Strategy

  • Looking for shipment prospects to China through forwarders who invited in a global bidding with large volume, such as global branded : Nike, Adidas, Uniqlo etc
  • Keep looking for export opportunities with specific POD, such as Japan outport, because there are lesser of shipping lines who provides those services and less competition
  • Prioritizing shipments with better ocean freight for POD Korea, particularly to Kwangyang, as we are the only carrier offering direct service to this port
  • Aside from charcoal (things we refused), concentrate on gaining the paint industries and wood product, which presently dominates shipments to Russia.

Challenges

  • There has been a decrease in shipments to China due to declining demand.
  • We continue to implemented SBS for shipments to Korea, while all other shipping lines (except Korean liners) have already waive this charge
  • Most carriers have temporarily suspended direct services to Incheon due to tight vessel space and capacity limitations, resulting in reduced service availability on the trade lane.

Market intelligence

  • Several carriers, including CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen, Hapag-Lloyd, HMM, Yang Ming, and ZIM, have reportedly announced General Rate Increases (GRIs) for the East Asia–US trade, effective September 15 and again on October 1, 2026.
  • The proposed GRI for October 1 is in the range of USD 2,000-3,000 per 40' container, depending on the carrier. However, this represents a rate filing and does not guarantee full implementation in the market.
  • Market experience suggests that GRIs rarely materialize at the full filed level under current conditions. Although the October 1 filing is approximately USD 500-800/FEU, effective increases are generally expected to be in the range of USD 200-400/FEU after commercial negotiations. This should be viewed as a general market outlook rather than an official Semarang rate.
  • In early September, Transpacific spot rates increased primarily due to the implementation of the September 1 GRI, with market reports indicating gains of approximately USD 300-500 on certain U.S. West Coast shipments.
  • Meanwhile, the Asia-Europe trade lane remains relatively weak or stable.
For October, carriers have filed GRIs, posing a potential rate increase risk for Semarang cargo routed via Asian transshipment hubs.
