PCI2 service: potential volume, market and competitors

Sales team assessment, week 39

Market highlights

  • ChinaQingdao demand exceeds Shanghai: large bulk industries are concentrated there and it serves as a distribution hub into Central Asia.
  • Japan outportsFew lines serve these ports, leaving clear room for growth as wood and wood-based shipments increase.
  • KoreaWood pellets still dominate to Busan, Incheon and Kwangyang. Incheon demand is rising because other lines have limited service.
  • RussiaVladivostok demand has risen slightly, mainly food commodities and wooden furniture.
  • MexicoManzanillo is stable and slowly increasing, led by apparel and wooden equipment.

Strategy

  • Target China shipments through forwarders invited to large global tenders for brands such as Nike, Adidas and Uniqlo.
  • Keep pursuing export cargo to specific PODs such as Japan outports, where fewer lines compete.
  • Prioritise better-yielding Korea cargo, especially Kwangyang, where SINOKOR is the only carrier with a direct service.
  • For Russia, focus on paint industries and wood products; charcoal remains declined.

Challenges

  • China shipments have fallen with declining demand.
  • SINOKOR still applies SBS on Korea cargo, while all other lines except Korean carriers have waived it.
  • WHL and EMC lead Japan at USD 350/550 including LTH and SBS.
  • Most carriers have suspended direct Incheon calls due to tight space, reducing lane availability.
  • SRG to Manzanillo market rates keep rising, averaging USD 6,000/7,000.

Semarang, week 39

PIL launches weekly Indonesia Thailand Service (ITS)

Maiden voyage MV Kota Johan 0079W, 23 Sep 2026.

The ITS mainly links Indonesia and Thailand. It extends PIL's intra-Asia network and shortens transit times between key regional markets, adding a direct competitor on SINOKOR's Semarang to Laem Chabang lane.

Transpacific GRIs and rate outlook

  • CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen, Hapag-Lloyd, HMM, Yang Ming and ZIM have announced GRIs on East Asia to US, effective 15 Sep and again 1 Oct 2026.
  • Filings for 1 Oct range from USD 2,000 to 3,000 per 40' depending on the carrier; these are filings, not guaranteed market levels.
  • Under current conditions GRIs rarely hold in full. Against roughly USD 500 to 800/FEU filed, effective increases of USD 200 to 400/FEU are expected after negotiation. This is a general outlook, not an official Semarang rate.
  • Early September transpacific spot rates rose on the 1 Sep GRI, with gains of about USD 300 to 500 on some US West Coast shipments.
  • Asia to Europe remains weak to stable.
October filings pose a rate increase risk for Semarang cargo routed through Asian transshipment hubs.
